Description
Every day, we make decisions based on information we find online-about health, money, school, work, and politics. But the digital world rewards speed and certainty, not accuracy.
Consider a few realities of the modern information landscape
• Search engines handle billions of searches every day, and social platforms deliver endless feeds designed to keep us scrolling.
• Hundreds of hours of video are uploaded every minute-far more content than any person can critically review.
• Surveys (including research from Pew Research Center) have found that roughly two-thirds of adults say made-up or misleading news creates confusion about basic facts.
In other words: information is everywhere, but trustworthy information is harder to identify than ever-especially with clickbait headlines, sponsored content, persuasive "expert" posts, and AI-generated text and images.
So how do you quickly figure out what to trust, what to verify, and what to ignore-without becoming cynical or overwhelmed?
That’s exactly what this course on Information Literacy is designed to teach.
In this course, you’ll learn how to
• Define information literacy and use it as a practical, everyday decision-making skill
• Turn a vague topic into a focused research question and a clear search plan
• Use smarter search strategies (keywords, operators, filters, and database tactics)
• Distinguish between popular, professional, and scholarly sources-and know when each is appropriate
• Evaluate credibility using simple frameworks (such as CRAAP and/or SIFT) you can apply to any source
• Verify claims through triangulation, lateral reading, and reliable fact-checking techniques
• Spot common red flags: manipulated images, misleading charts, cherry-picked data, false authority, and emotional framing
• Recognize bias (including your own), understand perspective, and read with healthy skepticism
• Use information ethically: paraphrase, quote, and cite properly to avoid plagiarism
• Make clear, evidence-based conclusions-and communicate them confidently
By the end of the course, you’ll have a repeatable process for finding better sources faster, evaluating them more accurately, and using them responsibly in school, work, and everyday life.
Whether you’re writing papers, building presentations, making business decisions, or simply trying to navigate misinformation online, information literacy is a foundational skill that will make you more effective, more credible, and harder to fool.
